Bariatric surgery is a successful procedure that has produced significant, sustained weight loss in thousands of obese patients. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), research has shown that bariatric surgery can reduce the risk of mortality from specific weight-related diseases, including:

  • Diabetes (reduced by 90 percent)
  • Cancer (reduced by 60 percent)
  • Heart disease (reduced by more than 50 percent)

However, not everyone carrying a significant amount of excess weight is a candidate for bariatric surgery. Some men and women have concerns about undergoing surgery to achieve their weight loss goals. For those patients, we offer effective non-surgical weight loss treatment options at West Medical.

Gastric Balloons: Non-Surgical Weight Loss Treatment

Gastric balloons provide an effective aid to weight loss without the need to undergo invasive surgery. These soft, flexible devices are placed in the stomach non-surgically, where they remain for up to six months. The balloons take up room in the stomach, creating a feeling of long-lasting fullness that causes you to consume far less food.

Non-surgical weight loss treatment with gastric balloons makes it easier to control your portions. For patients who are committed to lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet and exercise program, this treatment can lead to significant weight loss. Shedding the excess pounds can not only improve your physique and boost your self-confidence, it can also help lower the risk of serious weight-related health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes.

ReShape is the first gastric balloon to be approved by the FDA. This dual weight loss balloon offers a proven approach to help patients lose weight and keep it off. ReShape is known as an “integrated dual balloon,” as it is comprised of two smaller balloons instead of one larger balloon.

The dual ReShape balloon is placed in the stomach endoscopically. The patient is sedated and a thin tube inserted down the throat is used to place the deflated balloon in the stomach, then fill it with saline solution.

The balloon is left in the stomach for up to six months. At the end of the treatment period, the patient is again sedated and a thin tube down the throat is used to deflate and remove the balloon. Both the insertion and the removal procedure take approximately 30 minutes to perform, and the patient is free to return home after the procedure.

Advantages of ReShape

The ReShape balloon is a double balloon with a dumbbell appearance – two balloons attached in the middle. This may reduce the risk of the balloon deflating, passing into the small intestine, and causing bowel obstruction. It is unlikely that both balloons on either side of the dumbbell shape would deflate at the same time.

Orbera is another popular choice in a gastric balloon weight loss program. It involves one balloon that is filled with saline solution after it is inserted endoscopically into the stomach. Like the ReShape balloon, sedation is required for inserting or removing the Orbera balloon.

While the Orbera balloons remains in the stomach for up to six months, it aids in portion control and helps the patient have healthier eating habits. As stated by Orbera manufacturers, the design of the balloon and the technology of this non-surgical weight loss treatment can help patients lose up to three times more weight than with diet and exercise alone.

Advantages of Orbera

Orbera is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that can be performed under mild sedation. There are no incisions or sutures involved, and the treatment lasts for six months prior to removal.

Some gastric balloon systems involve placing more than one balloon at intervals approximately one month apart. As Orbera uses only one balloon, insertion only requires one trip to the doctor. Another advantage is that most patients begin to experience weight loss immediately after the balloon is inserted.

Obalon is a different type of gastric balloon system. It involves three smaller, gas-filled balloons placed in the stomach approximately one month apart.

There is no need for sedation in the procedure in which an Obalon balloon is inserted. The deflated balloon with a thin tube attached is simply swallowed, like a pill, with a glass of water. When the balloon reaches the stomach, it is filled with gas through the attached tube.

The patient returns in approximately one month to swallow the second Obalon balloon and have it filled with gas, and then returns again in another month for insertion of the third balloon. However, when the six-month treatment period is over, the Obalon balloons are removed by the same method as other gastric balloons – under sedation with the use of an endoscope.

Advantages of Obalon

Because the Obalon system involves several smaller balloons placed gradually over a period of months, the initial adjustment is typically easier on the patient. Gas-filled balloons are lighter than saline-filled balloons and may cause fewer side effects, such as nausea and stomach discomfort, during the initial adjustment period.

Another advantage of Obalon is that the smaller balloons can be swallowed by the patient to place them in the stomach. This system does not require an endoscopic procedure performed under sedation to insert the balloons.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Weight Loss Treatments

Gastric balloons have helped many patients lose two to three times the amount of weight they would be able to lose with diet and exercise alone. Non-surgical weight loss treatments are geared toward patients with a BMI of 30 to 40. They may be an excellent option for patients who are not candidates for an invasive procedure or want to avoid it.

ReShape, Orbera, and Obalon balloons take up room in the stomach and provide a significant support for patients who have trouble with portion control. When combined with lifestyle changes, this weight loss tool can help patients develop healthier eating habits for a lifetime – without the need for invasive surgery.

For overweight patients, shedding pounds with non-surgical weight loss treatment options can improve appearance, self-confidence, and dramatically enhance quality of life. It can also significantly reduce the risk of serious weight-related health conditions. Schedule a consultation at West Medical to find out if you are a good candidate for this advanced, effective, non-surgical weight loss treatment.
