I’ve always worked in an office setting, where I mostly sit all day. In the last 3 years I’ve suffered from severe low back and joint pains. I knew it was because of my weight gain so I tried to intensify my gym workouts and hike on the weekends. The pain just got worse. I tried to bare the pain because I believed that as I lost weight, the pain would go away but that didn’t happen. I was in so much pain the day after my workouts that I’d have to take another day just to recuperate. Advil quickly became my best friend. Eventually I became allergic to Advil so now what? Last year around this month, I started looking into weight-loss surgery because I was so fed up with my lack of performance at the gym and all the pain I was in. I wanted to perform better and also wear “normal” size clothing, without the use of girdle’s underneath. I had heard Big Boy from Power 106 advertising for West Medical and how they helped him and he raved about the staff and how easy the surgery was so I wrote the number down to give them a call. I spoke to my husband about it and he was very supportive. We go to the gym and hike together and he knew how much pain I was always in. I called West Medical and scheduled my appointment for the next seminar. I still remember it was a Saturday, June 7th, 2014. The surgeon described the various types of surgeries and what they entailed. He even had an actual size plastic stomach to demonstrate how the different surgeries varied. We all asked all the questions we had and it was pretty obvious at that point, this was what I needed and I signed up to start the process. My patient coordinator, Terri, was the best. She walked me thru the process and kept tabs on me. Very friendly, informative and so supportive. West Medical doctors ran various tests and although I didn’t have any complicated diseases, I was still found to be morbidly obese with a fatty liver. I heard those words and I was disgusted. Thankfully, these would be corrected once I had the surgery. I requested the gastric sleeve and my surgeon concurred that was an appropriate choice for me. My surgery date was scheduled for 12/18/2014. My patient coordinator was with me the entire way, before the surgery, in the recuperation room before I went in and after when I woke up. I cannot stress how important that was for me. I wasn’t even nervous to go into surgery. She kept my husband and my mother informed of my progress and so did my surgeon, Dr. Shabatian. While in recuperation, my over-night nurse, Lucy, was the best! She was kind, gentle, sweet, attentive, caring and careful. She was born to be a nurse and take care of people. That night at the surgical center was good. I had all the attention I needed. The following day, after I left the surgical center, on a Saturday, I received a call from my regular nurse, Jennifer, which checked up on me to see how I was feeling. She made sure I was on my meds before and after the surgery. I need to stress that the pain of post-surgery was MINIMAL. I was on pain killers only 3 nights. Didn’t need any during the day. My post-surgery visits with Dr. Shabatian have been productive. He always makes me feel great about the choice I made and I genuinely interested in the progress I make. He encourages me to stay on point with water intake and food portion control. Makes it easy to remember how much you should drink and eat. To-date I’ve lost a total of 60 lbs. in 4 months. I feel great and look great. My workouts have improved at the gym and I began running about a month ago. I signed up for my first race in years, scheduled for this July. I’m very happy with the results and recommend it to anyone that has had a struggle with weight-loss and hasn’t been successful with just diet and exercise. Words cannot describe the gratitude I have for the doctors, nurses and staff at West Medical Center!
