Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that has been clinically proven to be safe, effective and long lasting in improving sinus drainage and function. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not include bone or tissue removal from the nose.
Why balloon sinuplasty is performed
Some chronic sinusitis patients cannot get relief from uncomfortable and painful sinusitis from medications alone. These patients may be good candidates for our balloon sinuplasty in Los Angeles and Orange County. Our ENTs have helped many patients find relief, who had not benefited from other forms of sinusitis treatment.
How the procedure works
Balloon sinuplasty involves the opening of the inflamed sinuses by inserting a small, flexible balloon catheter through the nose into the narrowed or blocked sinus. When the balloon on the catheter is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the sinus pathway. With the pathway enlarged, the sinus can once again drain properly. The balloon is then deflated to remove it from the open sinus passageway. Certain patients are eligible to have their balloon sinuplasty in Orange County or LA at our offices, rather than under general anesthesia at a surgery center.
Is balloon sinuplasty safe?
Balloon sinuplasty has been performed safely on more than 150,000 patients, and more than 95 percent of patients who have had the procedure said they would have it again.
The procedure has a very low rate of complications since it is less invasive than traditional sinus surgery. Balloon sinuplasty generally involves less pain, a lower risk of infection, and less bruising and swelling, and patients usually are able to return to their everyday activities more quickly.
All procedures have some level of risk. Some of the associated risks include:
- Tissue and mucosal trauma, in less than 1% of patients
- Optic injury
