Obesity affects more than one-third of Americans, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Often misunderstood, obesity is often a very complex disorder that may be impossible to resolve with conventional methods.
The health problems and risk that accompany obesity include stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, and other serious health conditions. These conditions are among the leading causes of death, and gastric bypass will not only allow you to enjoy a better quality of life, but help you live a far healthier life.
Severe Obesity and Dieting
Unfortunately, severe obesity cannot be resolved with diet alone. Many people who suffer with severe obesity have tried again and again to lose weight with diet with little to no result. In these cases, weight loss surgery may be the best option. The National Institutes of Health reports that for those who suffer with severe obesity, bariatric surgery is indicated as a way to restore better health for the long term.
Patients come to West Medical to finally address and treat obesity with surgical intervention, including gastric bypass surgery. Our team of qualified, certified, bariatric surgeons are recognized as being among the finest in this field of medicine. Our approach includes advanced testing to ensure each patient is safe to undergo surgery. You can expect compassionate, individualized care when you visit with us at West Medical in Irvine.
What is Gastric Bypass?
Gastric bypass surgery was one of the first weight loss surgeries to be developed. This procedure consistently achieves more weight loss than any other type of bariatric surgery.
The procedure is a combination of two ways the body can be forced to lose weight: restriction and malabsorption. Surgically reducing the size of the stomach naturally reduces the quantity of food that can be eaten at one time, the restriction factor, and then reduces the quantity of calories and other nutrients from food the body can absorb, the malabsorption factor.
The surgery requires two separate steps. The first step involves separating a small section of the upper stomach from the lower stomach, stapling this upper portion with surgical staples to create a stomach pouch about the size of a golf ball. This part of the process leaves you feeling full after eating a very small food portion.
The next step is called the bypass. In this part of the procedure, the new, small stomach pouch is separated from the remainder of the stomach and the small intestine, connecting it to a lower section of the intestine where less nutrients and calories are absorbed.
Modern Gastric Bypass Techniques: The Difference
In the earlier days of bariatric surgery, the procedure was far riskier as it involved placing a large incision in the abdomen. At West Medical, our surgical team uses the most advanced surgical techniques, performing gastric bypass surgery laparoscopically. With smaller incisions, this approach leads to reduced discomfort and pain during recovery, faster healing, and minimal scarring.
