The City of Lancaster is located in the Antelope Valley, close to Edwards Air Force Base and the Happy Bottom Riding Club of 1940’s fame. Also known as the Rancho Oro Verde Fly-In Dude Ranch, the Happy Bottom Riding Club was a hotel, restaurant, and dude ranch owned and operated by famous aviatrix Pancho Barnes.
The ranch and its proprietress are featured in Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book The Right Stuff and in its 1983 film adaptation. Pancho Barnes, born Florence Leontine Lowe, was a San Marino socialite turned stunt pilot who broke Amelia Earhart’s world women’s speed record in 1930.
The Happy Bottom Riding Club had more than 9,000 members worldwide at the peak of its popularity. Rancho Oro Verde had one of the first swimming pools in the Antelope Valley, a rodeo stadium, and an airstrip for Pancho’s aviator friends to fly into. It was a favored hangout for test pilots and Hollywood elite in the 1940s.
Weight Loss Surgery in Lancaster
For people who are more than 50 lbs overweight, there are many reasons to consider weight loss surgery. One of the most compelling reasons is the benefit it can have for your overall health. Significant weight loss drastically reduces the risk of developing obesity-related life-threatening conditions, such as:
- Heart disease
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Liver disease
- Gallbladder disease
- Sleep apnea
The serious health risks, medications, and costs associated with these conditions not only threaten your safety but can also lower your quality of life. By remaining overweight, you run the risk of medical, emotional, and financial hardship for yourself and your family.
At West Medical, we want our patients to make highly informed decisions about their personal weight loss journeys. Our medical team has extensive experience in cutting-edge bariatric procedures. We can explain your treatment options and work with you to find the best treatment plan to achieve your personal weight loss goals.
What Is Gastric Bypass?
Gastric bypass, on average, leads to a greater amount of weight loss than any other bariatric procedure. The surgery not only reduces the stomach’s capacity to hold food, but also changes the digestive system to reduce the absorption of nutrients and calories.
In this procedure, a smaller stomach pouch is created and separated from the rest of the stomach, which greatly decreases stomach capacity, causing the patient to feel full faster with smaller portions. The stomach is stapled and the intestines are rerouted, which changes the way nutrients are absorbed as well as the amount of food the patient can eat. The larger portion of the stomach that no longer holds food still retains its normal blood vessels.
Benefits of Gastric Bypass
As reported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is difficult for people with severe obesity to maintain weight loss achieved through conventional methods, such as consuming fewer calories and increasing exercise. For many individuals, weight loss surgery may be the only effective treatment for severe obesity to maintain weight loss in the long run.
As with any surgical procedure, gastric bypass has benefits and risks. This procedure is one of the top options for people seeking weight loss surgery, and it has a number of advantages:
- Among the first bariatric procedures performed with decades of study data available
- Can be performed laparoscopically, with very small incisions.
- Rapid weight loss immediately after surgery and continuing for many months
- Beneficial results for patients with Type 2 Diabetes
- Improvement in obesity-related health conditions, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea
- More energy and better quality of life for many patients
Hormonal changes after gastric bypass and weight loss surgery can enhance energy expenditure – increase calories burned -- while dietary weight loss actually reduces energy expenditure levels. Because surgical weight loss creates an energy balance, it has a higher chance of lasting long term than weight loss achieved through dieting.
When you meet with our Lancaster medical team, we will explain in detail the risks and benefits of the procedure, advise you of the most appropriate treatment options in your case, and guide and support you through every step of your weight loss journey.
