Marina Del Rey is home to the world’s largest man-made small craft harbor. It all began in 1887 as the dream of real estate developer M.C. Wicks, who invested $300,000 to turn the Playa del Rey estuary into a major commercial harbor, but went bankrupt after 3 years. After unfavorable reports from government agencies, two world wars, and severe damage from winter storms, construction was finally completed and the dream was realized when Marina Del Rey was formally dedicated in 1965. Today the harbor is home to approximately 6,500 boats and one of Los Angeles County’s most valuable resources.

What Is Gastric Band and Lap Band Surgery?
Lap Band surgery has become a popular treatment option for people with obesity because of its minimally invasive and reversible nature. In this procedure, an inflatable silicone gastric band (Lap Band) is placed around the upper part of the stomach and inflated with saline solution. This creates a small pocket to hold your food. After the surgery, patients feel full faster, eat less, and lose weight.
At the time of the procedure, a small port is placed under the skin of the abdomen. Your surgeon can adjust the band for comfort and effectiveness by adding or removing small amounts of saline solution through the port. Patients usually need 5 to 8 adjustments per year in the first two years after surgery.
Lap Band is a brand name for a popular gastric banding system (the first to gain FDA approval in 2001), named for the laparoscopic surgery used to place the band. This is a minimally invasive technique using small incisions on the abdomen and a tiny camera that allows the surgeon to view the operative site on a monitor while performing the procedure. This technique is less invasive and results in a quicker, easier recovery and minimal scarring. The Lap-Band procedure is completely reversible if the band needs to be removed for any reason.
Why Have Gastric Band and Lap Band Surgery?
As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 36.5% of adults in the U.S. are obese. The CDC also reports that weight-related health conditions, including stroke, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer are among the leading causes of preventable death in the nation.
Unfortunately, obesity does not always respond well to diet and exercise. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) states that, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) people with severe obesity are resistant to maintaining weight loss achieved through conventional therapies, such as reducing calories and increasing exercise. For some individuals, bariatric surgery may be the only effective treatment to achieve weight loss that can be maintained in the long run.
Gastric band and Lap Band surgery is a reversible, minimally invasive procedure that helps patients gradually lose weight. Our patients typically lose approximately 1 to 3 lbs per week in the first year following surgery. Research has shown that bariatric surgery improves or resolves a range of serious health conditions, including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Degenerative joint disease
- Metabolic syndrome
- Fatty liver disease
Who Qualifies for Gastric Band and Lap Band Surgery?
Not all overweight people qualify for the Lap Band or bariatric surgery. As a general rule, patients must be 18 years of age or older and must have attempted and failed to lose weight with diet, exercise, and conventional methods. BMI must be greater than 40, or greater than 30 with a life-threatening weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea. The patient’s BMI must have been high for at least 5 years.
