The picturesque Southern California valley in which the city of Santa Ana is located was named in honor of Saint Anne by Don Gaspár de Portolá, leader of a Spanish expedition, in July of 1769. José Antonio Yorba and his nephew Juan Peralta received the land in a Spanish land grant and developed Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana for grazing cattle and productive farming. William H. Spurgeon bought 70 acres from the Yorba family in 1869 and plotted the site of a town which was named Santa Ana and incorporated in 1886.
Today, Santa Ana is a thriving city with a population of 342,930, located approximately 10 miles from the California coast. The City of Santa Ana lends its name to the Santa Ana Freeway, which runs through it, the nearby Santa Ana Mountains, and the Santa Ana winds that fuel seasonal wildfires throughout Southern California.

Why Have Weight Loss Surgery?
As stated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recognized bariatric surgery as the only effective treatment for obesity to maintain weight loss in the long run. According to NIH, people with severe obesity are resistant to maintaining weight loss achieved through diet, exercise, weight loss programs, and conventional methods.
The gastric band or Lap Band procedure and other bariatric surgeries work by changing the anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract, increasing feelings of fullness and reducing the desire to eat. Significant weight loss after bariatric surgery is associated with other changes in the body that help improve fat metabolism. Weight loss also reduces insulin and cortisol levels and the uptake and storage of fat. After shedding pounds, people often become more physically active, which plays an important role in maintaining a healthy weight.
Gastric Band and Lap Band Procedure
Gastric banding is a restrictive weight loss method in which the size of the stomach is reduced to help you feel full faster, eat less, and lose weight. This is accomplished with a flexible, inflatable, silicone band that is placed around the top portion of the stomach, creating a small pouch to hold your food. The Lap Band was the first adjustable gastric band to be approved by the FDA in 2001.
The band is placed around the upper part of stomach in a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, using small incisions and a tiny camera that allows the surgeon to view the operative site. The inflatable band squeezes the stomach into a small pouch that can hold about one ounce of food with an outlet approximately one inch wide.
A plastic tube runs from the band to a port just under the skin of the abdomen. Your surgeon can inject additional saline solution through this port to further inflate the band and make it tighter, or remove saline to loosen the band, as needed to improve weight loss and reduce side effects. Lap Band patients typically need 5 to 8 adjustments per year for two years after surgery.
Health Benefits of Gastric Band and Lap Band
Obesity-related health conditions are among the leading causes of death in the U.S. today. The good news is that Lap Band and other bariatric procedures have been shown to improve or completely resolve a number of serious health conditions, including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Cardiovascular disease
- Degenerative joint disease
- Metabolic syndrome
- Fatty liver disease
- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
Studies have also shown that bariatric surgery reduces 5-year mortality by 89% and improves quality of life in 95% of patients.
Santa Ana Gastric Band and Lap Band Surgeons
Gastric band and Lap Band is a minimally invasive, completely reversible procedure that can set individuals with obesity on the road to weight loss, improved health, and better quality of life. There is no resectioning of the stomach or rerouting of the intestinal tract in this procedure. It does not lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies because of malabsorption. Our patients typically lose 1 to 3 lbs per week after Lap Band surgery. The procedure is covered by most PPO insurance providers.
