Obesity is a common disorder in America today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of adults in the U.S. have this complex metabolic disorder. In addition to the effect it has on appearance and quality of life, obesity can also have serious health consequences. Weight-related health conditions, including stroke, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer are among the leading causes of preventable death in the nation.
Studies have shown that diet and exercise alone are not enough to combat severe obesity. As stated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the National Institutes of Health has recognized bariatric surgery as the only effective treatment to fight obesity and maintain weight loss for the long term.
At West Medical in Santa Ana, we perform gastric bypass and other weight loss procedures to help people struggling with obesity lose weight and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Our highly qualified bariatric surgeons are among the most respected in their field. We focus on communication along with advanced testing, and treat each patient with the utmost in personalized care.
What Is Gastric Bypass?
As one of the first bariatric procedures performed, gastric bypass has decades of studies and a major clinical database of available information. On average, it produces more weight loss than any other bariatric procedure.
The procedure combines two weight loss methods – restriction and malabsorption. It dramatically reduces the size of the stomach and therefore the amount of food the patient can consume at one time (restriction) and also reduces the amount of nutrients and calories absorbed by the body (malabsorption).
The surgery is performed in two steps. First, the surgeon separates a small portion of the upper stomach from the larger lower portion, stapling the upper portion to form a pouch approximately the size of a golf ball where the food will go. The new pouch can hold only a small amount of food, and after the procedure, patients feel full faster, eat less, and lose weight.
The next step is the bypass, in which the surgeon disconnects the pouch from the remainder of the stomach and the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) and connects to the jejunum (a part of small intestine further down). Food traveling from the pouch will bypass the duodenum and go directly to the jejunum, reducing the body’s absorption of nutrients and calories.
Gastric bypass was originally performed as open surgery with a large incision in the abdomen. Thanks to advances in medical technology, our surgeons are able to perform this procedure laparoscopically today, with a technique that results in less post-surgical pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring.
Am I a Good Candidate for Gastric Bypass?
If you are severely obese and have not been able to achieve and maintain sufficient weight loss with diet and exercise alone, you may be a good candidate for gastric bypass. Each patient is unique, but certain general requirements must be met to qualify for bariatric surgery:
- Age 18 or older
- BMI of 40 or higher; or BMI of 35 or higher with a serious weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or Type 2 diabetes
- BMI has been high for at least 5 years
- Conservative weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, have failed to produce results
- Commitment to make life-changing decisions for a healthier lifestyle
Santa Ana Gastric Bypass and Weight Loss Surgeons
Historical buildings are part of Santa Ana’s charm. In a 20-square block residential area northeast of downtown known as the French Park Historic District, the streets are lined with large homes built in the 1890s through 1920s that once belonged to prominent Orange County citizens. The Minter House, located at 322 West 3rd Street, is a two-story Italianate style house built in 1877 sitting on a ½ acre lot with the original water tower and barn. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Old Orange County Courthouse, an imposing red sandstone structure built in the Richardson Romanesque style, was opened with an all-day celebration in 1901. Because it was seismically unsafe, the courthouse was closed in 1979. Today the grand old building has been restored and now serves as the Orange County History Center.
