The Yost Theater and Ritz Hotel located in Santa Ana’s Downtown Historic District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It opened as The Auditorium in 1913 and was renamed the Clunes in the same year. It housed vaudeville, silent films, and talkies until it was leased to the Olivos family in 1950, after which it became a Mexican cinema house. Luis Olivos, Jr. brought in Mexican cinema talent, including Antonio Aguilar and Vincente Fernandez, and also brought Ike and Tina Turner and Sonny and Cher to the theater. As of August 21, 2010, The Yost Theater and Ritz Hotel is licensed to be operated after hours and now functions as a nightclub and concert venue.
The Yost Theater and the Downtown Historic District reflect Santa Ana’s rich history. Although the city is densely populated, in 2011 Forbes ranked Santa Ana as the fourth-safest city in the nation among cities with a population over 250,000. At West Medical, we are proud to serve the Santa Ana community, providing cutting-edge weight loss procedures, including gastric sleeve surgery, and comprehensive medical treatment for obesity.
What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve is a weight loss procedure in which a large portion of the stomach is removed – nearly 85% -- leaving a thin, vertical tube or sleeve roughly the shape and size of a banana. We perform the procedure laparoscopically, using small incisions and a tiny camera to guide the surgery. Surgical staples are used to keep the new, smaller stomach closed.
After the procedure, you will feel full a lot faster, consume fewer calories, and begin to shed pounds. You may also feel less hungry. The larger portion of the stomach removed in this procedure is where the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin is produced. This surgery not only reduces stomach capacity and the amount of food you can eat, but also lessens ghrelin secretion and hunger sensations.
Gastric sleeve surgery and a healthy diet go hand-in-hand, and you will need to eat the right foods in the corrent portions after the surgery. You will also need to take vitamin and mineral supplements, as your overall food consumption will be reduced. This procedure is a successful weight loss method that helps patients lose weight and keep it off in the long run.
Health Benefits of Gastric Sleeve
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and certain types of cancer are obesity-related conditions that rank among the leading causes of preventable death in the U.S. However, studies have shown that bariatric procedures, including gastric sleeve surgery, can improve or resolve a wide range of serious and life-threatening health conditions, including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Sleep apnea
- Lipid (cholesterol) abnormalities
- Fatty liver disease
- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
- Venous stasis (congestion and slow circulation in the veins due to blockage)
- Urinary stress incontinence
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) reports that in a large review of 621 studies involving 135,247 patients, researchers found that bariatric surgery causes improvement of diabetes in more than 85% of diabetics and remission in 78%. Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery was found to result in 80% remission of diabetes.
Gastric Sleeve Advantages
For many people, gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is an excellent alternative to more major weight loss surgeries. Advantages of this procedure include:
- Minimally invasive techniques for less post-operative pain and scarring and quicker recovery
- More weight loss than with adjustable gastric banding
- Decreases both stomach size and ghrelin secretion
- Does not require implantation of a foreign body as in gastric banding
- Does not require periodic adjustments
- No cross-connection or rerouting of the intestinal tract
- No malabsorption (reduction in the body’s absorption of calories and nutrients) that could lead to nutritional deficiencies
- Covered by most PPO insurance providers
