Tarzana is an affluent neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. It is located on the site of a ranch formerly owned by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. The neighborhood is named after the famous Burroughs character, Tarzan of the jungle. Among Tarzana residents age 25 and older, 40.3% have a four-year degree, and more than 4,000 have a master’s degree or higher.
As in the remainder of Los Angeles County and across the nation, many Tarzana residents today are struggling with obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 36.5% of adults in the U.S. are obese, at an estimated annual medical cost of $147 billion.
Our bariatric surgeons at West Medical in Tarzana perform cutting-edge weight loss procedures, including gastric band and Lap Band surgery, to treat patients with obesity. We are dedicated to surgical excellence and committed to providing compassionate, knowledgeable care and the absolute best in patient services.
Why Have Weight Loss Surgery?
Although not everyone who is overweight is a candidate for bariatric surgery, it may be the best treatment option for many severely obese men and women. Research has shown that diet and exercise alone may not be enough for obese individuals to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. As stated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), weight loss through dieting reduces energy expenditure (calories burned), which makes it easy to regain the weight you have lost. Bariatric surgery, on the other hand, maintains or enhances energy expenditure for a better chance of losing weight and keeping it off for the long term.
Among the best reasons to consider weight loss surgery is the benefit it could have for your health. Obesity-related diseases are among the leading causes of death in the United States. Studies have shown that bariatric surgery improves or resolves a wide range of serious and life-threatening health conditions, including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- High blood pressure
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Metabolic syndrome
- Degenerative joint disease
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Stress urinary incontinence
What Is Gastric Band and Lap Band Surgery?
The adjustable gastric band is a small, flexible, silicone device that is surgically placed around the upper portion of the stomach to create a new, smaller pouch, or “stoma,” to hold your food. Simply stated, it reduces your stomach capacity and the amount of food you are able to eat, so you feel full faster and for longer periods of time. Gastric banding is an effective treatment to help you lose weight gradually and keep it off.
The Lap Band was the first adjustable gastric band to gain FDA approval in the U.S. in 2001. The band is placed in a minimally-invasive, laparoscopic procedure using a few very small incisions in the abdomen and a tiny camera that allows the surgeon to view the operative site as the procedure is performed.
In the first 24 months after the surgery, adjustments are made 5 to 8 times per year to achieve the optimal rate of weight loss for the patient. Through a comfortable access port placed just beneath the skin, the surgeon can make the gastric band tighter or looser to adjust the degree of restriction and rate of weight loss. The average patient loses 55% of excess weight in 5 years after this procedure.

Qualification for bariatric surgery is determined on a patient-by-patient basis. However, general requirements which apply to the majority of patients include:
