Hysterectomy is a major surgery, and is only recommended by a gynecologist if the benefits outweigh inherent risks. It permanently ends a woman’s ability to get pregnant, and alters her hormonal balance and overall health, permanently. However, a hysterectomy is highly effectively in curing certain conditions with intractable gynecological problems that do not respond to nonsurgical methods.
Usually it is used as a last resort for uterine or reproductive system problems, and may be indicated for:
- Uterine, cervical, ovarian or endometrium cancers.
- Severe endometriosis after conservative methods have proven ineffective.
- Chronic pelvic pain.
- Excessive bleeding after childbirth.
- Uterine prolapse, where the uterus drops into the vaginal canal, often causing urinary incontinence or difficulty with bowel movements.
During the procedure, the woman is under general anesthesia so she is asleep and cannot feel pain. The uterus is removed either through an incision in the abdomen or vagina. The technique the surgeon uses depends on the underlying cause for the hysterectomy. Women stay in the hospital for at least a few days after hysterectomy for monitoring, as there is a 10% risk of infection.
After hysterectomy, menstruation stops, but there may be light vaginal bleeding for up to 6 weeks after surgery. Women often feel discomfort at the site of the incision for about a month, and burning or itching at the incision site is normal. If the ovaries are not removed during the hysterectomy, women do not experience hormone-related effects.
Risks of hysterectomy include infection, blood clots, bleeding, bowel blockage, adverse reaction to anesthesia, or anesthesia-related problems.
