Symptoms of a Shoulder Bone Spur

It’s important to note that bone spurs sometimes have no symptoms. However, when they do cause discomfort, symptoms present as:

  • Pain and tenderness
  • Sometimes swelling
  • Weakness
  • Occasional numbness if the spur is affecting nearby nerves

Tests for a Shoulder Bone Spur

Sometimes shoulder bone spurs present with few or no symptoms, making diagnosis difficult unless a physician discovers the bone spur incidentally. It is not uncommon for an MRI, x-ray or other scan to be performed for an unrelated injury and a bone spur is then discovered. A doctor may be able to diagnosis the bone spur through scanning technology, a personal examination of the afflicted area, or if the bone spur was reported with accompanying symptoms.

Treatments for Shoulder Bone Spur:

If a bone spur in the shoulder has no symptoms, then most physicians will opt not to treat it unless it becomes uncomfortable. In that case, icing the bone spur area and taking anti-inflammatory typically can ease discomfort and reduce any swelling or soreness. If symptoms persist, and doctor may inject a higher level of anti-inflammatory medicine directly to the area. If your shoulder bone spur has affected any nerves in the back, neck, or vertebrae, and is causing pain, a physician may recommend a surgical procedure to alleviate your discomfort.
