A broken hand is a common but painful injury that involves cracking or breaking a bone within the hand. This type of injury typically occurs to those trying to brace themselves from a fall, those who participate in sports, or from any number of everyday accidents. A broken hand requires immediate medical attention to ensure that the bones heal properly and full mobility can be restored.

The physicians and orthopedic specialists at West Medical have extensive experience handling the treatment of a broken hand. A member of our West Medical team can walk you through your treatment options and guide you throughout the process of care and recovery.

Contact us at (855) 690-0565 to make an appointment or schedule a consultation with one of our experienced specialists and begin your route to recovery.

Symptoms of a Broken Hand

  • pain and tenderness
  • swelling and possible bruising
  • deformity of the hand or a depressed knuckle
  • inability to move the finger

Tests for a Broken Hand

Your physician will conduct a physical examination to inspect the injured hand; this may include exercises to measure the range of motion of your hand and fingers. Scans, like an x-ray, may be ordered to determine the severity of the break.

Treatments for a Broken Hand

If your broken hand can be treated non-surgically, then a cast or a splint will be applied to your hand and wrist, or even forearm area to ensure that the bones are aligned in order to heal properly. Typically, a cast must be worn for at least a few weeks and then a physician or physical therapist will instruct you on strengthening exercises in order to regain your full hand mobility.

If your broken hand requires a surgical solution, and orthopedic surgeon may realign the bones in your hand using wires, plates, or screws in order to ensure that the fractured area is properly repositioned. Surgical treatment is not uncommon and while it may require some post-operative physical therapy to ensure you regain the entirety of your strength, a physician at West Medical can guide you through the treatment and healing process.

The physicians, surgeons, and specialists at West Medical have extensive experience successfully treating broken hands, through surgical and non-surgical routes. The orthopedic specialists and surgeons at West Medical have performed countless successful operations and provide access to top tier treatment technology to ensure your care is efficient and as painless as possible.
