Ganglion cysts are small lumps or masses that most typically appear on the back of the hand near the wrists. Usually, ganglion cysts are painless unless they are pressing on the surrounding nerves. Surgery is a common form of treatment for cysts that have become unsightly or painful to sufferers.

The surgeons and specialists at West Medical have extensive experience handling the care and surgical removal of ganglion cysts. A member of our West Medical team can walk you through your treatment options and guide you throughout the process of care and recovery.

Symptoms of a Ganglion Cyst of the Wrist/Hand:

  • visible lump below the skin
  • many cysts present without any symptoms, unless the cyst is affecting the surrounding nerves and causing discomfort

Tests for a Ganglion Cyst of the Wrist and Hand:

A physician will do a physical examination of the area affected by the ganglion cyst, including applying pressure or light to the area to determine its tenderness and density. Your doctor may also order a series of imaging scans in order to get a better sense of the affected area and rule out other possible conditions.

Treatments for a Ganglion Cyst:

There are two routes typical to treating ganglion cysts. The non-surgical method involves observing the area to ensure growth or changes occur in the area. Additionally, your doctor may suggest wearing a brace and immobilizing the affected area in order to reduce stress to the cyst that may cause it to expand or cause discomfort. Your physician might also suggest an aspiration of the area, meaning that the fluid inside the ganglion cyst is drained in order to relieve pressure in the area—this method of treatment is common but may not fully or permanently remove the cyst.

The surgical solution to ganglion cyst may be incorporated if the nonsurgical methods did not reduce size or pain in the area. Ganglion cyst surgery involves removing the cyst and its root and is typically an outpatient procedure that is minimally invasive.

The physicians, surgeons, and specialists at West Medical have extensive experience successfully treating cases of ganglion cysts. The surgical staff at West Medical is well versed in performing ganglion cyst removals and ensures that each patient is efficiently and attentively cared for throughout the treatment process.
