Knee Surgery

Knee surgery encompasses any procedure done onto the knee and parts of the knee. This might include reconstructive surgery, partial or complete replacement of the knee. For many, knee surgery is caused by injury or from stress onto the knee derived over time. Knee surgeries can often solve many problems patients might have with sitting, standing or walking.

Innovation in Knee Surgery

For a while it seemed as though only metal replacement or, ‘bolts and screws’ so to speak, where the only real treatment for ‘fixing’ the knee. These days, the most innovative and minimally invasive procedures for knee surgery have been developed and mastered for the ultimate treatment options.

The most common of these practices is known as ‘arthroscopy.’ Arthroscopy is the procedure by which a tube with a small camera at the end is inserted through one of two cuts made into the knee during surgery. The camera is attached to a video monitor that lets the surgeon see inside the knee.

The process is not only effective, it’s often an outpatient surgery and most patients are home the same day. Knee surgery is also known to take a toll on the body for a long period of time after treatment. People are noted to be unable to move much or stay active, but new process of surgery has allowed a full recovery in a much quicker speed.

Choices knee surgery also includes the mini-midvastus, the subvastus, mini-arthrotomy, and the quadriceps-sparing technique. These newer approaches use smaller and modified instruments and have the ability to provide the same range of motion that can come from open knee surgery. The best part about these procedures is that they are known for their early recovery times.

Cartilage grafting is a procedure in knee surgery to aid knees with limited or contained cartilage loss because of trauma or arthritis. This surgery is designed to replace cartilage on the surface of the joint. Another option for arthritis of the knee is synovectomy, which will remove the inflamed joint tissue causing the arthritis. This is known to be a slow recovery surgery, as most patients take 6 months to a year before fully recovering.

Knee Pain

For many people, knee pain derives from years of stress onto the knee cap. This can come from inactivity leading to weight gain, sitting and standing incorrectly, or athletic exercise that leads to injury and great pain. Those with minor knee pain can do a number of things to alleviate discomfort and the possibility of long term age:

  • Take it easy– If you notice your knee locking up or hurting when you walk or sit down, be cautious. You may have injured your knee from an unexpected injury, or even be having pain from a muscle strain in the knee. Do not try to push your limits when you feel this kind of pain. It’s best to visit a doctor to see what’s wrong before it get worse
  • Try topical treatments– creams, wraps and hot packs are great ways to relieve pain in the knee. It’s not effective as a cure, but most people do achieve short term relief with these kids of aids.
  • Always elevate– When the knee is bent, it causes pain to all surrounding ligaments. A bent knee is a sign of the knee being ‘used.’ When suffering from knee pain, remember to always keep your leg elevated when possible. This will help restore the leg into its natural resting position, allowing for a more natural healing of pain.
