Ingrown Toenails Symptoms
Symptoms of ingrown toenails can include, but are not limited to:
- Pain, discomfort, and tenderness along the sides of the nail
- Redness and swelling around the toe and toenail
- Tissue infection near the toenail
Ingrown Toenails Causes
Ingrown toenails develop when the toenail grows into the flesh of the toe. Causes of ingrown toenails include, but are not limited to:
- Wearing shoes that are too tight around your toes
- Cutting toenails short, or not straight
- Curved nails
Ingrown Toenails Treatment
Treatment can sometimes be done at home, but this is strongly discouraged for those who suspect an infection or if you have a medical condition that puts your feet at high risk. Home treatment includes soaking the foot in room-temperature water with added Epsom’s salt and massaging the sides of the nails to reduce inflammation.
A podiatrist can examine the toe more thoroughly to determine the best treatment for your condition. Oral antibiotics may be necessary if an infection is present. A simple surgical procedure, usually performed in the office, can remove a portion of the ingrown toenail. The procedure includes numbing the toe and removing a part of or the entire toenail.
