What is Failed Back Surgery Syndrome?

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) is a condition deriving from unsuccessful spinal surgery. This includes any person who hasn’t been cleared of the condition that they were treated for, and have suffered worse conditions from the initial surgery. This happens often, and it’s not always result of general malpractice, but a number of different things can happen during and after surgeries that will lead to even worse conditions. Most cases arise from invasive open back and neck surgeries.

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Causes:

When patients are first diagnosed with spine conditions, doctors may suggest surgeries after natural healing practices will not alleviate pain. Sometimes, CT scans and MRI’s are unable to identify the condition exactly, leading to a misdiagnosis. A misdiagnosis will in turn become mistreated, often causing dangerous consequences. The spine is also very intricate, and it isn’t uncommon that wrong areas of the spine are treated during surgery. Some spinal surgeries call for inserting metal into the spine, and that can cause infection, another indication of FBSS. For any surgery that has ended in greater overall pain or internal spine damage, FBSS is diagnosed.

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Symptoms:

  • Severe Pain
  • Greater pain after surgery than before
  • Spasms
  • Sharp pains in specific areas, repetitively
  • Need for excessive amounts of pain medications
  • Newer spinal conditions
  • Impaired mobility

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Treatment:

Treating FBSS is complicated and extremely important. First, it’s important to understand the patients’ medical history. Understanding what they were initially diagnosed with, how they were treated for it, and what went wrong. Treatments like physical therapy, over-the-counter medications, exercising, and hot/cold compressors will ease the pain from the aftermath of FBSS. If the situation is more severe, doctors may suggest a second surgery to re-do the initial surgery, and re-diagnosing.
