A kidney stone is a small, hard deposit that forms in the inner surface of the kidney and is comprised of minerals and acid salts. While most kidney stones are small enough to pass on their own, through the urinary tract, some require surgical treatment to pass. Kidney stones can become lodged in the ureters, which are the tubes carrying urine from the kidneys to the bladder, and cause intense pain in the lower back, side and groin.
Kidney Stones Symptoms
Symptoms of kidney stones include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever (which may indicate infection)
- Bloody urine
- Burning pain during urination
- Blocked flow of urine
Kidney Stones Treatment
Treatment of kidney stones may include drinking plenty of water to pass the stone, and a special diet may be prescribed to help pass the stone. Nine of ten patients will pass stones on their own within a few weeks, while larger stones may require nonsurgical treatment, such as extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). This high-energy shockwave sends through the body with x-ray guidance to crush the stone into small pieces. This usually requires anesthesia and can be performed on an outpatient basis.
Surgical removal of the stone may dislodge the stone by inserting a telescopic instrument into the kidney through a small incision in the back or into the bladder and ureter to pulverize the stone.
