RECOVERY AFTER WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

Once you’ve had your weight loss surgery, we’ll focus on your recovery going as quickly and smoothly as possible. Gastric Sleeve and LAP-BAND patients typically go home within 24hours. Gastric Bypass patients go home after 2-3 nights. Since we perform most of our procedures using tiny incisions (laparoscopically), you can expect to have a shorter recovery time on average, than someone who has an “open” procedure which involves a large incision.

EATING

After surgery you will be on a liquid-only diet while your stomach and/or digestive tract heals from the procedure. You’ll then move to a phase of soft or pureed foods, and finally will introduce solids. Our nutritionists will go over your eating plan in detail with you, so you’ll know exactly what foods you should have during each phase of recovery.

RETURN TO WORK

Everyone recovers differently from surgery. Majority of Sleeve and LAP-BAND patients return to work within one week of the operation. Gastric Bypass patients typically needs two weeks to recover. Patients are advised not to do any heavy lifting for 6 weeks as they heal.

SUPPLEMENTS

You’ll be taking vitamin and nutritional supplements after your surgery. How many you take will depend on which procedure you’ve had. Taking these supplements as directed is very important because you’ll be getting fewer nutrients with your new reduced eating plan.

DRIVING

When you are discharged, you’ll need someone to drive you home. You will not be able to drive until you are finished taking your prescription pain medication. Often patients take this medication for approximately one week, but that will depend on your surgery and healing.

EXERCISE

While we do not want you to do any vigorous exercise while you recover, walking around is good for the healing process. If you can only walk for a few minutes at a time, that’s fine. Short bursts of movement throughout the day can be beneficial to your recovery. We encourage patients to start walking within a few hours after surgery. From there patients increase their daily activity little by little. No heavy lifting for 6 weeks.
