Groin Hernias

Groin hernias, also known as inguinal hernias, occur when tissue or part of the intestine protrudes through a weakened area in the lower abdominal wall, near the groin. These hernias are more common in men due to natural weaknesses in the inguinal canal.

Causes of Groin Hernias

  • Increased abdominal pressure from heavy lifting, straining, or chronic coughing.
  • Weak abdominal muscles due to aging, genetics, or previous surgeries.
  • Obesity or sudden weight gain, adding pressure to the groin area.

Symptoms of Groin Hernias

  • A bulge in the groin or scrotum, which may increase when standing or straining.
  • Pain or discomfort while lifting, coughing, or bending.
  • A dragging or burning sensation in the groin area.
  • In severe cases, nausea, vomiting, or an inability to push the hernia back in, which may indicate strangulation, a medical emergency.

Treatment for Groin Hernias

  • Watchful waiting for small, painless hernias.
  • Surgical repair (open or laparoscopic) to reinforce the weakened area and prevent complications.
  • Lifestyle changes like avoiding heavy lifting, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight to reduce pressure on the abdomen.
