Hernia Surgery Recovery

Recovery Timeline

  • First Few Days: Rest, manage pain, and limit movement.
  • 1-2 Weeks: Light activities can resume, but avoid heavy lifting.
  • 4-6 Weeks: Most people fully recover and return to normal activities.
  • Several Months: Minor swelling or tightness may persist as the body fully heals

Managing Pain & Discomfort

  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed.
  • Apply an ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) to reduce swelling.
  • Use a small pillow for support when coughing or sneezing.

Activity & Movement

  • Walking is encouraged to prevent stiffness and blood clots.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects (over 10 lbs) for at least 4-6 weeks.
  • Gradually return to normal activities based on your comfort level.

Wound Care & Hygiene

  • Keep the incision clean and dry to prevent infection.
  • Avoid baths, swimming, or soaking until cleared by your doctor.
  • Watch for signs of infection: redness, swelling, pus, or a foul odor.

Diet & Bowel Care

  • Eat a high-fiber diet to prevent constipation and avoid straining.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Take a stool softener if needed.

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Severe pain or swelling that worsens.
  • Signs of infection (fever, redness, pus, or warmth).
  • Nausea, vomiting, or difficulty urinating.
  • A new bulge or lump near the surgical site.
