LA Hernia

Instructions After Hernia Surgery

Pain Management

  • Mild to moderate pain is normal after surgery.
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed.
  • Use an ice pack (wrapped in a cloth) on the affected area for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.

Activity & Movement

  • Walking is encouraged to improve circulation and prevent stiffness.
  • Avoid heavy lifting (anything over 10 lbs) for at least 4-6 weeks.
  • Avoid strenuous activities like running, jumping, or intense exercise until cleared by your doctor.
  • Driving: You may resume driving once you are off pain medications and can move comfortably (usually after 1-2 weeks).

Incision & Wound Care

  • Keep the incision clean and dry.
  • You may shower as instructed by your doctor, but avoid soaking in bathtubs or pools until the wound heals.
  • Watch for signs of infection: redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or a foul smell.

Diet & Digestion

  • Eat a high-fiber diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) to prevent constipation.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • If needed, take a stool softener to avoid straining during bowel movements.

Returning to Normal Activities

  • Most people can return to light work within 1-2 weeks, but jobs requiring physical effort may require 4-6 weeks.
  • Sexual activity can usually resume in 2-4 weeks, depending on comfort and doctor’s advice.
  • Some swelling, tightness, or minor discomfort may last for a few months as the body heals.

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Severe pain or swelling that does not improve.
  • Signs of infection (fever, redness, pus, or warmth around the incision).
  • Nausea, vomiting, or trouble urinating.
  • A new bulge or lump at the surgery site.
