LA Hernia

Sports Hernias

A sports hernia, also known as athletic pubalgia, is a soft tissue injury in the groin or lower abdomen, commonly affecting athletes engaged in sports that involve twisting, sudden movements, or intense physical activity. Unlike traditional hernias, a sports hernia does not always cause a visible bulge but can lead to chronic pain if untreated.

Causes of Sports Hernias

  • Sudden twisting or directional changes during sports like soccer, hockey, or football.
  • Repetitive strain on the groin muscles, weakening the lower abdominal wall.
  • Overuse injuries from excessive training without proper recovery.

Symptoms of Sports Hernias

  • Sharp or burning pain in the groin or lower abdomen, worsening with activity.
  • Pain when twisting, sprinting, kicking, or coughing.
  • Tenderness in the groin area without a noticeable bulge.
  • Weakness or instability in the lower abdominal region.

Treatment for Sports Hernias

  • Rest and physical therapy to strengthen core and groin muscles.
  • Ice and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Gradual return to activity with modified training to prevent reinjury.
  • Surgical repair may be necessary if symptoms persist despite conservative treatment.
