If you have varicose veins, then you know how painful and achy they can be when trying to exercise. Varicose veins are caused by a lack of circulation in the veins, resulting in pressure that causes them to bulge and protrude. Working out helps to improve the circulation in your limbs, encourages blood flow, and strengthens muscles. These in turn help reduce pain and discomfort. To help relieve the pain and discomfort from varicose veins, we’ve compiled a list of leg exercises to make working out enjoyable again.
KNEELING LEG LIFTS: First, get on all fours, making sure that your arms are aligned with your shoulders. Then, lift and extend one leg up and outward, similar to an ‘L’ shape. Hold it up for a little bit, allowing the blood to flow throughout your leg. Lower it back down and repeat.
CALF RAISES: Stand with your legs straight. Slowly, rise on to your tiptoes and then lower back down. You can do this while supporting yourself against a wall or holding on to a stable object like a chair, for more stability.
BICYCLE KICKS: While lying on your back, lift your legs in the air as they’re bent at the knee. Next, pedal your legs in the air like you were riding a bicycle. This again improves the blood circulation in your legs.
SIDE LUNGES: To do side lunges, you must stand with your feet and knees together. Take a big step with your right foot to the right side and lunge toward the floor. Make sure your right knee does not go past your toes and make sure to keep your left leg straight. Focus on bending at the waist by engaging the glutes, allowing you to keep the back straight. Best form calls for you to not collapse at the knee.
