Lapband surgery can help patients who are at least 50 pounds overweight and struggle to lose weight with diet and exercise alone. At West Medical, we strive to help patients who are fighting obesity to shed their extra pounds by offering a variety of bariatric surgery options, including two different types of gastric bands: Lap-Band and Realize band.
Both options utilize a similar strategy and tend to provide similar results — though, determining which band is best suited to you may come down to personal preference along with your West Medical doctor’s recommendation. Both bands have proven to be highly successful in terms of short-term results, proving especially effective for those who need a jumpstart to begin their new, healthier lifestyle.
What is a Gastric Band?
A gastric band is a rubber band-like device that is essentially made to wrap around a patient’s stomach, thus creating a smaller stomach pouch and causing the patient to become full much faster. Over time, the gastric band reduces a patient’s caloric intake and encourages a patient to eat much smaller portions.
Whether a patient chooses Lap-Band or Realize band, the surgery is performed laparoscopically, requiring only minimal incisions and the use of small cameras. Patients are generally able to recover after a short period of rest. Both gastric bands require regular adjustments, though the Realize band’s larger width tends to need fewer adjustments.
