Healthy Heart Habits To Practice For The Holidays

The holidays give way to warm, fuzzy feelings, family time and joyful cheer to spread. However, these times also have been known to give rise to the incidence of heart attacks. Health professionals can surmise this to high stress and a deviation from healthy habits such as eating right and getting enough exercise. The concern for maintaining a healthy heart during these times is valid and we’ve put together a few tips to have a heart-healthy holiday season!

EAT A BALANCED MEAL: Eating a balanced meal doesn’t mean that you have to skip out on your favorite holiday meal staples of stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, or roasted meats. Feel free to have them – in moderation. The balanced aspect comes into play when you also don’t forget to have a healthy portion of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your meal as well.

STAY CALM: Despite the stress and rushed feelings from holiday shopping and preparations, it is always important to maintain your calm. Do not worry about things that are out of your control and when faced with potential conflict with another individual, always take the high road and maintain a positive spirit. Eliminating unnecessary stress goes a long way towards a healthy heart this season.

ME TIME: Take aside some precious quality time for yourself. Steal away to a quiet area, relax and reflect on the positives you have during these times.

GIVE: Rather than focus on the stress of finding your loved ones the perfect gifts, instead focus your attention on the positive reactions they’ll have when receiving a gift. Maintaining an giving spirit, with no expectations of receiving anything in return, will increase the amount of pleasant surprises for you and your friends and family this holiday season.

DRINK IN MODERATION: Drink to feel merry, but not to the point of drunkenness and unneccesary intoxication. Drinking to excess is not conducive to a healthy heart.

EXERCISE: Though times can be busy, make a conscious effort to fit in some fitness. Whether it be abbreviated versions of your regular workout routines or sneaking in extra forms of activity during your holiday preparation, making sure to exercise and stay active is key to a succesful plan for a healthy heart during the holidays.
