What are Varicose Veins?

A rather common condition, varicose veins are typically marked by highly visible veins, usually in the legs. For many patients, little to no pain is experienced; however, some patients do report minor pain or discomfort as well as itching. Varicose veins are more common among women, but the exact causes are still not fully understood. Although, it is expected that a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and genetic factors may all play a role in the development of varicose veins.

Treatment Options

  • Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) — A minimally invasive and highly effective procedure that can be conducted in a normal medical office. The procedure requires only a slight incision, under anesthesia, through which a small fiber-optic wire is inserted and activated. The generated heat safely (and comfortably) destroys the vein. Most patients recover rapidly.
  • Microphlebectomy — In this procedure, a small incision is made and the troublesome vein is extracted. With local anesthesia, patients experience little to no pain and downtime is minimized.
  • Compression therapy — More often used to halt further development of a varicose vein than to reverse it, compression therapy places pressure on the patient’s veins to improve circulation. This is generally done via compression stockings, which could be likened to a tightly-fitting pair of socks.
  • Surgical Ligation and Stripping — The most invasive treatment option, surgical ligation, and stripping are typically reserved for advanced cases. This procedure involves either the complete removal or obstruction of a major vein in the affected limb (almost always in the patient’s leg).
