What Is ReShape™ Dual Gastric Balloon?

The ReShape™ is a comprehensive weight loss program utilizing dual gastric balloons. The balloons are inflated in patient’s stomach during a 20-minute outpatient procedure and help in controlling portions and curbing appetite.

Dual Gastric Balloon

How Does ReShape™ Dual Gastric Balloon Work?

Since the dual gastric balloon simply works with the body to control portions, no special diet is required for patients, who then can still delight in a number of food options without the need for any supplemental medication. As a result of the gastric balloon training the body to want smaller portions of food, patients are able to continue eating such portions upon removal of the balloon.

This makes the dual gastric balloon procedure a crucial and advantageous step towards long term weight loss goals.

The ReShape™ dual Intra-gastric balloon evenly distributes 450cc’s in two different balloons and represents a real step forward in gastric balloon design.

It builds on years of knowledge and published results from the basic single balloon to incorporate a unique dual balloon design. With a fill volume of over twice that of a single balloon, the ReShape™ Dual Gastric Balloon has the theoretical potential of better weight loss and is designed to conform better to the stomach’s natural curvature than a single balloon, with less movement. These balloons are independently filled and sealed so in the unlikely event of a balloon deflating, the other balloon holds the device in place. Note that gastric balloons cannot be used in patients who have already had gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric bypass.

Insertion of the balloons is completed in approximately 20 minutes, with no hospital stay required. These aspects are highly appealing to those that are looking for a weight loss procedure that does not interfere with their busy schedules. You can get in and out and on your way to weight loss! The non-invasive aspect of the ReShape™ Dual Gastric Balloons also is favorable for patients whose BMI’s are above qualifications for other invasive weight loss options (click here to view our BMI calculator).

Important ReShape™ Safety Information

Indications: The ReShape™ Integrated Dual Balloon System is indicated for weight reduction when used in conjunction with diet and exercise for obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 – 40 kg/m2 (click here to view our BMI calculator) and have one or more obesity-related comorbid conditions. It is indicated for use in adult patients who have failed weight reduction with diet and exercise alone.

Contraindications: The ReShape™ Integrated Dual Balloon System is not recommended for patients with conditions that may increase the risk of poor results (e.g., prior gastrointestinal surgery with sequelae, prior open or laparoscopic bariatric surgery, inflammatory diseases of the GI tract, potential upper GI bleeding), who are unwilling to participate in an established medically-supervised diet and behavior modification program, who have alcohol or drug addictions, who receive daily prescribed treatment with aspirin, anti-inflammatory agents, anticoagulants or other gastric irritants, or who currently are or may be pregnant or breast-feeding.

Warnings: The maximum placement period for the ReShape™ Integrated Dual Balloon is six months. The risk of intragastric balloon deflation and intestinal obstruction (and therefore possible complications related to intestinal obstruction) is significantly higher when balloons are left in place longer than 6 months. The presence of blue-green urine or sudden loss of satiety, increased hunger and/or weight gain may be a sign of balloon deflation. Failure of patients to take prescribed daily proton-pump inhibitor medication increases the risk of gastric ulceration or perforation.

Adverse Events: Placement of the ReShape™ Integrated Dual Balloon requires an endoscopic procedure with sedation. Potential risks associated with an endoscopic procedure and sedation include adverse reaction to sedation (headache, muscle pain, nausea), infection, pneumonia, and respiratory distress. Potential risks associated with the ReShape™ Integrated Dual Balloon include ulceration, perforation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, belching, heartburn, dehydration, and sore throat. These complications may be severe enough to require early removal of the ReShape™ Integrated Dual Balloon. Although the ReShape™ Dual Balloon design provides an anti-migration feature, there is the potential risk of device migration and intestinal obstruction. The risk of intestinal obstruction is increased if the device is not removed after 6 months. If intestinal migration occurs, surgical or endoscopic removal may be required.
