As the season and weather permit, now is usually the time to take advantage of exercising out in the cooler weather. While most of us do not have direct access to wilderness trails, that doesn’t mean that it’s not possible to go on a brisk hike. Enter urban hiking, a growing activity that is turning the concrete jungle into into hiking trails and lets those participating become urban explorers. Urban hiking is a fun activity as it can lead you towards all types of adventures through the thorough exploration of your own city! Below are a few tips that help you truly enjoy a good urban hike.
GEAR UP: Whether you’re trekking out in comfortable walking shoes or bring a backpack that can carry a few essentials, it is always crucial to have the proper gear. Other items, such as specialized socks that provide more cushion and reduce the chances of blisters, sunglasses and light jackets to protect from the elements should definitely be considered as well.
PACK ACCORDINGLY: Your urban hiking pack shouldn’t be so bulky and filled with a bunch of extraneous things. The basics should always be a good GPS system (if not already on your phone via app), plenty of water and healthy snacks and even a portable phone charger or spare battery source.
PICNIC FUN: Try to pack a healthy and light meal with you that you can easily enjoy at a local park on your urban hiking route. Not only do you get to enjoy a nice lunch outside, you can also explore the park right after.
SAFETY FIRST: Always be mindful and wary of the street signs and designated crosswalks. Also, if your route is scheduled to go into dusk or evening, make sure to wear reflective gear so you can be seen.
KEEP A JOURNAL: Whether it be a photo journal using your phone or camera, or a written one documenting in detail the things of note that you saw on your urban hike, it’s always great to keep one for reference.
TAKE THE STAIRS: The absence of natural inclines on nature trails can easily be emulated by taking as many stairs as possible when out on your urban hike route.
