Dr. George P. Teitelbaum is a nationally recognized interventional radiologist and neurointerventional surgeon at West Medical with more than 30 years of experience performing advanced image-guided and endovascular procedures. At West Medical he focuses on advanced outpatient interventional radiology, using minimally invasive catheter-based techniques in place of open surgery whenever it is medically appropriate.
His background in neurointerventional surgery gives him particular expertise in navigating extremely small and complex blood vessels using microcatheters, guidewires, advanced angiographic imaging, and selective and superselective embolization. Many of his procedures are performed through a vascular access site only a few millimeters in size, and patients are often able to return home the same day.
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE). Dr. Teitelbaum performs GAE for appropriately selected patients with chronic knee pain from osteoarthritis. Using angiography and microcatheter techniques, he identifies the abnormal blood vessels that feed inflammation around the knee and selectively embolizes the targeted genicular arterial branches. GAE offers a minimally invasive option for patients whose knee pain persists despite conservative treatment and who wish to avoid or delay knee surgery.
Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE). Dr. Teitelbaum performs UAE, also called uterine fibroid embolization, for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids. Through selective catheterization of the uterine arteries, blood flow to the fibroids is reduced while the uterus is preserved. UAE can relieve heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, abdominal fullness, urinary frequency and other fibroid symptoms, and is an important minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy for appropriately selected women.
Before joining West Medical, Dr. Teitelbaum served as Medical Director of the Providence Neurovascular Center. Earlier in his career he spent approximately 15 years at the USC Keck School of Medicine as Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of Interventional Neuroradiology, treating some of medicine’s most technically demanding vascular conditions, including cerebral aneurysms, acute ischemic stroke and carotid artery disease. The precision required for that work forms the foundation of his approach to embolization throughout the body.
Dr. Teitelbaum has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, is an inventor with multiple issued U.S. patents, and co-founded medical-device companies that were later acquired by major medical technology organizations. He is a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology and is board certified by the American Board of Radiology in Radiology and Neuroradiology.
