Sclerotherapy for Problem Veins

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive vein treatment that involves the injection of a special solution directly into the problem vein.

Sclerotherapy solution collapses the vein and causes it to scar, which forces your body to reroute blood through healthier veins. Your body, over time, absorbs the collapsed vein into local tissue, where it eventually fades away.

What Is Sclerotherapy Solution?

Sclerotherapy treatment involves a safe, biodegradable solution with active ingredients like sodium tetradecyl sulfate, hypertonic saline, chromated glycerin, and polidocanol.

This treatment is well-studied and is one of the best options for reticular veins, including spider veins.

What to Expect During Sclerotherapy

During your sclerotherapy appointment, our doctors will use an ultrasound machine to identify the veins needing treatment.

We’ll administer a local anesthetic to increase your comfort and ease during the procedure. After injecting the sclerotherapy solution, we place a compression pad onto the treatment site and move on to additional injections, if needed.

The number of injections you will receive during your treatment depends on how many veins need treatment, the size of the veins, and the type of solution we use.

Once all veins have been injected, we finish the treatment with compression therapy. On average, sclerotherapy procedures take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.

After Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy does not require downtime, but there are some lifestyle adjustments you will need to make.

We encourage patients to walk after their treatment to help encourage circulation. The treatment sites should be protected from sunlight for a few weeks to avoid skin discoloration.

While we encourage walking, we discourage strenuous exercise while you recover. We also ask patients to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory medications, as well as hot baths for at least 48 hours after the procedure.

Our team of compassionate experts will advise you on all post-procedural instructions and self-care routines you should follow while recovering from sclerotherapy.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy improves the appearance of the treated sites and can help with pain relief. You should expect little to no downtime after your sclerotherapy procedure.
