Varicose & Spider Veins: Should I Get Treatment?

Written By: Emma Squillace

If you have visible veins in your legs, you’ve probably wondered about treatment. These spider and varicose veins can make people feel self-conscious to the point that they won’t wear summer clothing. They can also hurt! Varicose veins, especially, can cause heavy aching in the legs, throbbing, or itching. They can make wounds heal more slowly, and can lead to vein rupture or ulcers in the legs. Whether you’re dealing with pain from your visible veins, or are tired of worrying about the appearance of these bulging or purple veins, it’s worth considering treatment. Here are some questions to ask yourself when you’re trying to decide if varicose vein treatment or spider vein treatment is a good option for you.

Do the veins affect my day to day life?

Do you think about the appearance of your veins when you’re getting dressed? Do you shy away from clothes that reveal your legs, even when it’s hot out? If the appearance of visible veins is interfering with your confidence or actions on a daily basis, that’s a good sign that treatment may be warranted. We see many men and women who are frustrated with trying to cover unsightly veins, day after day. Even if you are not yet feeling physical effects of your veins, you may want to learn about treatment options if you find these veins are affecting your daily routines.

Do I have any physical symptoms from these veins?

Visible veins are not just about appearance. They can cause symptoms like heaviness in the legs, discomfort, itching, and pain. These veins can make wounds and cuts heal more slowly, and can interfere with day to day activities and your job. If you are suffering with any symptoms from your visible veins, the sooner you get treatment, the sooner you can get relief. Otherwise, there are lifestyle changes you can make to help alleviate symptoms like taking short walks often through the day, wearing compression garments, and losing weight. While these actions can give you a break from symptoms of veins, they will not cure the veins. The only way to get rid of spider or varicose veins is with medical treatment.

Am I ok with these veins never getting better?

With some medical conditions, you can “wait it out” and know you’ll see improvement. Unfortunately, visible veins do not get better on their own. If you’re trying to decide whether you want treatment, think about what it would mean to you to have these veins stay the same or get worse over time. If you are fine with that, then you may not want treatment right now. If you know you do not want to deal with your veins as they get worse, getting treatment as soon as possible is likely a good option.

What would treatment entail from a financial and recovery perspective?

Many vein treatments are covered by insurance – especially when these treatments are for varicose veins. To find out if your vein treatment can be covered by insurance, get in touch with us and we can help you understand your choices. In terms of recovery, we have minimally invasive procedures that allow you to return to your daily activities right away. While we have more invasive surgical procedures, many people do not need surgical intervention to get rid of their visible veins.

Visible veins can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and do not get better on their own. The good news is that we have a range of treatments available that are successful for many people, and minimally invasive. These options include sclerotherapy and laser treatment. If you’re wondering if you should get vein treatment, we are happy to speak to you and make sure you have all the information you need to decide.
