Surgical ligation and stripping is a varicose vein treatment offered in our Los Angeles area offices. Compared to other varicose vein treatments, surgical ligation and stripping is a more invasive technique.
How the procedure works
The treatment involves tying off and removing the great saphenous vein (GSV). The GSV is a large vein that runs from the ankles, up the inner leg and thigh, and stops at the femoral vein which is found in the groin.
Surgical ligation and stripping is an outpatient surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the phlebologist will cut small, slit-like incisions in the groin in order to expose and subsequently tie off the GSV. The doctor will then cut along the inner thigh, and using a stripping instrument, will completely remove the problematic vein.

Surgical ligation and stripping side effects
Unlike other forms of treatment for varicose veins, ligation and stripping surgery commonly causes pain and soreness following the surgical procedure. This is likely caused by the GSV leaking blood into the tissue that surrounds the area that has been treated. Other side effects, such as numbness and swelling, may also occur.
Although surgical ligation and stripping is beneficial for some, the procedure isn't recommended for the elderly. This is because the procedure is a high risk treatment for those patients with poor blood circulation. It is also not recommended for pregnant women.
After surgical ligation and stripping
In most cases, you will return home the day of the treatment. However, full recovery can take up to a month after the procedure occurs.
