The clocks have been adjusted, it’s staying lighter for longer, and many people are feeling the motivation to do some spring cleaning. While most of us picture de-cluttering closets or pruning the yard, there are some specific ways that you can use the spring cleaning mindset to help with a weight loss journey. These tips can benefit those of you with a gastric sleeve or other surgical procedure, those of you with a weight loss balloon, or anyone who’s looking to lose weight through diet and exercise alone.
Spring clean your pantry
If you ask our successful patients what actions they took after bariatric surgery to enhance their weight loss, some of them will list ‘cleaning out the kitchen’ as one of their top steps. When we’re hungry, in a hurry to get a meal on the table, or running late – it’s very natural that we make-do with whatever we see on the counter or in the fridge. So by getting rid of the junk food, processed snacks, and high-carb or high-sugar options, you’re setting yourself up to make good choices. After you’ve thrown out or donated any food that does not fit your eating goals, go shopping and pick up some fresh fruits and veggies, protein, and healthy snacks. By creating a pantry full of options that will support your weight loss journey, instead of derailing it, you’re taking a great step forward.
Spring clean your closet
One of our favorite non-scale victories (NSVs) is when a patient can fit into an outfit they haven’t worn in years. It can also be very rewarding to try on a shirt you used to wear, and see how it fits differently because of your weight loss. If you’re just starting out on your journey, pick an article of clothing that you’re looking forward to wearing again. Hang it where you can see it every day. Use this to remind yourself of the hard work you’re doing, and what you’re working towards. If you have lost a substantial amount of weight, consider donating a bag of your larger clothing and feel good about saying goodbye to those sizes.
Spring clean your mindset
If you are starting to feel frustrated with yourself for not losing weight, or losing weight ‘too slowly,’ remember that it’s so important to create a positive journey for yourself. Feeling ashamed or irritated at slow progress is natural, but can also be destructive. If you are losing weight each week, you are moving in the right direction. However, if you have not been losing weight despite your efforts at dieting, maybe it is time to ask about your options. Many people dismiss of surgical or non-surgical weight loss procedures at first, however, one of the most common responses we hear from our patients is “I wish I hadn’t waited so long!” Talk to an expert if you are stuck in a weight loss rut.
Spring clean for calorie-burning
We’ve talked about types of spring cleaning that can help jump-start your weight loss journey, but actual spring cleaning can help also! Cleaning, gardening, and other household chores burn a lot more calories than watching a movie or taking a nap. So in addition to setting up your environment for the spring, you’re helping fuel your weight loss at the same time. Ironing, planting, digging up weeds, vacuuming, and laundry are all good options for burning calories.
While you’re taking steps to ‘spring clean’ your kitchen, closets, and even mindset, remember that weight loss success is very difficult, but we are here to help. If there is anything we can do to help you learn about your surgical and non-surgical options for people wanting to lose 30 – 50 pounds or more, give us a call. We’re here to talk at 855-690-0565.
