The gastric balloon is an FDA approved device that gets placed in your stomach without surgery. With the gastric balloon weight loss program, patients who follow the program can expect to lose around 30 pounds of excess weight (although results vary) and achieve the lifestyle goals they want. This is a non-surgical, short term weight loss option that simulates a full stomach more quickly after smaller meals. There are two types of weight loss balloons, and we offer them both in our Los Angeles, Orange County and other offices. The two weight loss balloons are called ORBERA and ReShape.
Do I qualify?
The ideal weight loss balloon patient is a moderately overweight adult who has been unable to achieve their desired weight loss through traditional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. The FDA has approved the balloon for adults with a BMI from 30 – 40 (click here to view our BMI calculator).
If you believe the balloon may be a good choice for you, please set up a consultation with us. The first consultation with your doctor will involve discussions about:
- Your medical history
- Your previous attempts at losing weight
- Your personal goals
- Your commitment to the program
- How comfortable you feel about the whole process which is an important part of the journey.
Once you have decided to go ahead with your Orange County or Los Angeles gastric balloon weight loss program, your doctor will schedule a date for your procedure. Schedule your consultation today by calling us at (855) 690-0565.
While you are sedated, a weight loss balloon is placed into the stomach with the help of an endoscope that goes through the mouth and into the stomach. The balloon is then filled with 500-700 ml of saline fluid and a blue dye. It takes only 15 minutes and you will go home the same day.
The gastric balloon program
After the balloon is put in place, you will begin the gastric balloon weight loss program. During this one-year program you'll be meeting with our professional support team and learning the principles that will become the basis of your success.
During the first six-month period, the gastric balloon is in place and you will meet regularly with the West Medical team to monitor your progress and receive education and training.
These important educational aspects of the program involve the nutrition and lifestyle changes that you must follow in order to achieve long-term success. Your regular meetings with the support team will continue for another six months after the balloon is removed.

Weight loss with the gastric balloon
With the ORBERA or ReShape balloon, the weight loss is rapid with the majority of weight loss typically occurring in the first three months of treatment. On average, balloon patients lost about 3 times the weight loss of patients who tried diet and exercise alone. The adjustments to your eating habits and your continued efforts to stay active will greatly influence your results.
The gastric balloon works mainly by reducing the capacity of the stomach for food, slowing down the rate at which the stomach empties, and providing a sensation of fullness after eating small meals.
Removal of the gastric balloon
The balloon is designed to stay in place for 6 months before it is removed. Removal of the intragastric balloon takes around 20-30 minutes. The process is similar to when you had it inserted. During the removal procedure, you will be sedated and your Los Angeles gastric ballon doctor will remove the sterile salt water from the intragastric balloon before removing the deflated balloon from your stomach.
It is very important that you continue seeing your professional support team on a regular basis during this final six months of the program, as this will set the foundations for the future.
