Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used for varicose vein treatment. There are two main categories of microphlebectomy treatment: ambulatory and trans-illuminated powered phlebectomy. Because trans-illuminated powered phlebectomy is a more invasive procedure, the doctors at our Los Angeles and Orange County West Medical offices only utilize the ambulatory microphlebectomy treatment.

During ambulatory phlebectomy, the phlebologist will first numb the area of the leg to be treated with a local anesthetic.
Once anesthesia is administered, the physician will use a scalpel to cut the skin that is near the problematic varicose vein. After an incision is made, the physician will use a small hook and grab the varicose vein, subsequently removing it from the leg.
In most cases, a pulling sensation may be felt, but it is painless. If necessary, a small stick may be utilized, depending on the size of the incision. The phlebologist will then cover the incision with a bandage. From start to finish, ambulatory phlebectomy will usually take between 30 minutes to one hour.
After the procedure
Following the ambulatory phlebectomy, the patient is fully able to engage in physical activities including walking and climbing stairs. Side effects of the procedure may include a numbness or an allergic reaction in the area that has been treated. Swelling and bruising is also common, but normally temporary.
